In early April, I had the opportunity to join Peoples Company Delta Land Manager Julie Boggs and our 2024 Leading Harvest auditing team on managed farms in northern Louisiana.

Tailwater recovery systems, reservoirs, and relifts are some of the water carrying practices farm operators, landowners and conservationists implement to efficiently move water in the Delta. While there are several Delta aquifers used across the region, most farmland depends on pumping from is the Mississippi River Alluvial Aquifer.

Accounting for all expenses is critical to keeping a business running efficiently, from estimating upcoming fiscal needs to knowing what level grain and livestock sales need to be to produce a profit.

You don’t have to look far to find headlines highlighting the high entry costs of farming. For each of those headlines, another one can be found pointing to the issues of the aging American farmer and a “sidelined” next generation waiting for their opportunity to step in. A 65-year-old farmer has faced a lot of challenges in their lifetime from weather volatility and the 1980s farm crisis to the more recently rising cost of capital. There’s no question that they have earned their spot at the head of the operation.

Peoples Company, a full-service land transaction and management business, today announced the hires of Thiago Lima and Tommy Funk, continuing the company’s national expansion. Lima will oversee Peoples Company’s farm management in Florida, Georgia and Alabama and work alongside Peoples Company’s brokerage team. Funk will focus on Texas and Oklahoma, with an emphasis on land management and land acquisition.

Louisiana is renowned for its rich culture, extensive agricultural opportunities, and diverse wildlife. Bountiful and diverse wildlife populations offer unique recreational hunting opportunities, which is the exact reason that Louisiana is referred to as the “Sportsman’s Paradise.” This article centers on Louisiana duck hunting, but waterfowl hunting is a very popular pastime across the country, particularly in the other Delta states of Arkansas, Mississippi, and Tennessee.

We always seek to be a good partner and building strong, positive relationships is important to our management approach. I hit the jackpot this day, as I got to share a hot meal out in the field with my farmer tenant and his family.

White-tailed deer are one of the most iconic wildlife species across the country and, by far, the most hunted big game species. Managing populations and herd health is an important aspect of maximizing hunting opportunities. One effective way to support your local deer population is by planting food plots. Once established, food plots provide supplemental nutrition for deer, especially during critical times like winter and early spring when natural forage is scarce. Soil fertility, plant selection, and weed control are just a few of the key components that contribute to the overall success of deer food plots.
